Postcard #3.1 - Switzerland: Zurich

Zurich, the last stop of an unforgettable day.

Someone told me that when they thought about Zurich, they thought about Money; and is true. In Zurich money is in the air.

Zurich is a very beautiful city located in north-central Switzerland at the northwestern tip of Lake Zürichand. But this city is more than money and a good life. The lake of Zurich is one of the most recommended attractions and a very important place in the city; in a sunny day is the perfect place to hang out and, once again, enjoy the view.

This city is the perfect place for every taste. It’s a place full of culture, where you can find all kinds of restaurants, museums, the most amazing views (Yes, I know, #meandtheviews), the lake, parks, and so much more.

For me, the perfect way to know a place is just walking around, and that is what we did. Our first stop was Lindenhof Park, this park is a very good place to start, not just because it's a really nice place to delight with the view of the city, but also the surroundings are really beautiful and the streets will give you a warm welcome to the historical part of the city, it's a nice place, even if you just want to relax and have a beer.

If you keep walking through the historical part of the city you will find the St Peter church, one of the most important churches in Zurich with Romanesque and Gothic architecture, it is recognized as the largest church clock in Europe. Another curious thing about it, the church's steeple is owned by the city of Zürich, while the nave is owned by the St. Peter parish of the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of Zürich.

Walking down the street is the Fraumünster church, that belongs to the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of Zürich and it's known, in English, as the Women's Minster or Our Lady Minster. Crossing the Limmat river, by one of the many bridges available, you will find the Grossmünster, a Romanesque-style Protestant church, and, finally, The Predigerkirche, a Romanesque church of the then Dominican Predigerkloster (a monastery of the Dominican Order) to complete the visit to the four main churches of the old town in Zurich.

Then you must walk through the Bahnhofstrasse, this is the main street where you will find a lot of fancy restaurants, the most emblematic and recognized luxury brands, obviously the watchmaking, the most amazing cars, fabulous people and fabulous life. Walking through this place is when you definitely feel all the money surrounding you.

The Bahnhofstrasse will take you directly to the Bürkliplatz, a dock where you can find all kinds of activities, markets, fairs, and events; this is a great place to get closer to the culture and life of Zurich, also the starting spot where you can buy a ticket to the boat tour. Personally, I have an obsession with touring the cities by boat. I feel that there is nothing more perfect than seeing the buildings, the lake, the sky, the mountains, all at the same time; So obviously I have to recommend you the boat tour.

We did our boat trip with The Lake Zurich Navigation Company (ZSG), which is pretty good because they have a few options that you can choose according to the time that you have. This is an optional activity so is not included in initial price of the trip.

  • Round trip 1h 30 minutes: 2nd class CHF 8.80 per adult (from 16 years old) / CHF 4.40 children from 6 years old.

  • Round trip 3 hours: 1st class CHF 42.80 adults / CHF 21.40 children. 2nd class CHF 26.00 adults / CHF 13.00 children.

Check the website for more options and keep in mind that the prices may change https://www.zsg.ch/en/

One of the things that I found very curious about the city is that there are many fountains where you can drink the water. I think it is a great idea and I appreciated it with every step because on a hot day there is nothing better than a little cold water, in addition, the fountains are very beautiful and combine perfectly with the historical essence of the city.

After a beautiful day walking through the city, the cherry on top is sitting on the pier and enjoying the sunset.

If you go with an agency you will be in Zurich until 21:00 - 22:00 hours, which give you around 7 - 9 hours (it depends on the traffic), which is a lot of time to see Zurich; my advice, first analyze what kind of trip do you want to do? Is it more cultural, relaxing, focused on the architecture or arts?; once you have that clear you can think about the things that you really want to see and identify them on the map; make a little itinerary and organize your day. This will help you to have more control over the time you have and use it in the way you want, but keep an open mind to changes, you will probably find other activity in the city or with the agency that you can try, this depends on the time of year you decide to travel.

Remember: the trip cost € 69 but is just transportation service & guide, this included maps and explanation of the main attractions. You have to keep in mind that food is NOT included, so if you want to have good meals I suggest that considered to have around 15 - 20 euros minimum per meal, this in a regular restaurant, not a fancy one, after all Switzerland is very expensive.

Do not forget that the current exchange is 1 Euro for CHF 1.19. Some places receive Euros but not coins, and you can always pay by card.
